Aberdein Considine property The Gables, 2 Cooper's Brae, features in an Evening Express Editorial.
It certainly didn’t happen overnight built this major refurbishment was worth the wait for one North-east couple.
Tastefully restored and fully modernised, the inviting villa was quite some project for Iian Gilmour, 38, and hairdresser Helen Robertson, 39, who didn’t have far to move – having previously lived right next door. “We lived next door and when the property came up for sale we decided to have a look,” Helen said.
“It was an absolute wreck but Iain is a joiner so he could strip it back and turn the house into something really good.”
Buying the property in 2008, the family moved in two years later after an extensive makeover.
Taking the time to making it right, Helen and Iain were able to create a perfect family home for their children Ashley, 22, Jay, 15, and four-year-old Coen.
“There isn’t a room that wasn’t covered when the place was re-done,” Helen said. “There’s an extension as well, we had a lot of ideas, we wanted it open-plan and an island in the kitchen as well.”
The home now offers a fantastic living space decorated in neutral tones with a splash of green here and there. “It’s my favourite colour,” Helen said, “there’s little bits of it around the kitchen and dining area.”
“My favourite room is the bathroom with its stand alone bath,” she added. “It used to be the kitchen, but we knew what we wanted so we converted it and made it into a very modern bathroom.”
With large sliding glass doors in the sitting room leading to the spacious garden it’s perfect for the kids to go out and safely play in the garden.
“The windows in the sitting area are great, you can see out into the garden and keep an eye on little ones,” Helen said.
With great space on offer the property is blessed with a variety of storage options throughout, creating a tidy and welcoming atmosphere. “There’s loads of storage, there’s cupboards and wardrobes all over the place,” Helen said.
“There’s plenty of places to keep things tucked away, under the stairs and in the bedrooms to keep things tidy.”
The property has also been the ideal place for friends offering a great opportunity for entertaining with the open-plan kitchen area proving a great place to spend time together. “We have people over all the time, it’s great in the summer because you can have a barbecue,” Helen said.
“The weather’s been not bad so we’ve had a few barbecues already this year.”
Situated in the village of Longside, located outside Peterhead, the family have enjoyed living in the area and sending the kids to the nearby schools.
“It’s a village location, it’s nice and quiet and the neighbours are nice,” Helen said.
“Everything you need is a short drive and it’s only ten minutes down the road to Peterhead.”
With the next step taking the family to Stuartfield, this time Helen and Iain are looking to build their own home.
“We decided to build there and we’re looking forward to it,” Helen said. “We’ve put a lot of work into our house and we’re hoping to create another great place to live with our next project.”
