Rob Aberdein, Partner, reflects on the firm's continued growth as the Aberdein Considine opens its seventeenth office in Scotland and second in Edinburgh.

As we open our 17th office I thought it would be worth reflecting on what this means to the firm and to also take a look at the journey that we have been on so far and where that journey will take us next.

Established in 1981, Aberdein Considine is now an award winning multi-disciplinary national law firm, it hasn't always been that way though. From humble beginnings of 2 members of staff who opened their doors for business in a former florist’s shop in a back street in Aberdeen a little over thirty years ago, we currently have an annual turnover in excess of £17m and a staff complement that now exceeds 300.

The firm forged its reputation in the buying and selling of residential property but now has a diverse range of legal, property and financial professional advisory services that include - please indulge me here - the following: corporate law; employment law; commercial property; family law; insolvency; dispute resolution; debt recovery; professional negligence; equine law; buying and selling residential property, residential conveyancing; property management; asset management; wealth management; independent financial advice; corporate benefits, pensions; wills, trust and executries; criminal defence; tax planning; leasing; finance litigation; personal injury; contentious construction law; professional negligence; Court of Session and Sheriff Court Advocacy and medical negligence.

We were ecstatic to be named the 2012/13 winners of the prestigious Private Client Law Firm of the Year and were voted Large Law Firm of the Year at the 2011/12, both at The Law Awards for Scotland. The awards validated the progress, growth and diversification that has been ongoing since the firm started its journey.

Our  latest office follows ‘hot on the heels’ of our property and financial office opening on Edinburgh’s Lothian Road in May and continues a period of rapid growth that has seen new offices opened in Glasgow, Livingston and Bathgate - all within the last 12 months. In legal terms we are now a Top 15 Scottish Law Firm in terms of both fee earners and turnover and we are ‘knocking on the door’ of the 'Top 10'.

Our talented lawyers, independent financial advisers and estate agents today provide advice to clients large and small – from private clients and SMEs through to FTSE 100 and multinational companies. All clients are hugely important to us and strategically acting for private clients, sole traders, partnerships and companies whose turnovers are less than seven figures is extremely important to us and at the core of our plans for growth.

Information Technology has been at the centre of the firm for many years now and we have been adept at harnessing the power of new and emerging technologies and blending them with the legal, property and financial services we provide in order to deliver high quality advice effectively and efficiently. We have an above sector spend on IT and have an in-house team of 10 IT Professionals, 3 of whom are Software Developers building our own proprietary Applications. We are told by clients that they simply do not see the sophistication of our systems and technology replicated elsewhere in other Scottish or even UK law firms.

Why have we been able to achieve a moderate degree of success in such a short period of time? I believe that it is because we are not like other law firms. Both private and corporate clients frequently tell us that we do not fit the image of the traditional law firm and client surveys over the years have found our lawyers to be "empathetic", "professional", "down to earth". We are told that our people have an engrained philosophy of "How can we do things better?" and our clients also say that we are "lawyers they can relate to". We take this as high praise indeed.

Underpinning everything we do is also a commitment to care. To care for our clients and to care about the outcome of the work we are privileged to undertake for them. We also care about our staff deeply. Teamwork is of critical importance to us and we will do our utmost to provide all our staff with a challenging and rewarding environment. Working together we believe we can provide a national Scottish private and corporate professional advisory service that is second to none.

Our new Exchange Tower office will be home to six litigation lawyers – to begin with at least - who will focus on Court of Session and Sheriff Court Advocacy, Dispute Resolution, ADR and Mediation, Debt Recovery, Asset Finance Recovery, Personal Injury, Construction Law and Professional Negligence. The office will also make us one of the few firms - or perhaps the only firm - in Scotland that can offer a truly national Court Agency service. We have recruited a number of other lawyers who will join in the coming months and are actively looking to expand all our existing legal departments into Edinburgh and to add new specialisms and expertise through lateral hires. Our Financial and Property Divisions also have their eyes on the Capital and have exciting ideas about how they can expand and grow their Departments.

These are exciting times indeed…
